EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS4) — UTEP announced that GECU is their inaugural jersey-patch partner in a press conference on Monday afternoon.
The Miners will wear a GECU patch on each of the football jerseys, as well as all men’s and women’s basketball uniforms. The deal, starting this fall, will run for three years for an undisclosed amount.
“College athletics right now is being driven by the ability to generate revenue,” UTEP athletic director Jim Senter said. “Every single revenue stream, we want to raise. We have to raise if we’re going to be a viable athletic program. Your partnerships matter, and that is what drives that.”
As UTEP enters their first season in the Mountain West, the Miners are now competing against a higher level of budgets. The Miners are not among the top spenders in the Mountain West, but this deal is an important step moving towards that.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve started at an amount and every year that amount has doubled, tripled and gotten better,” UTEP head football coach Scotty Walden said. “It’s our job to take what we got, continue to make it better every year. We have a now first time ever a distinct plan to make even next year better. You know we should, next year we should be in a in a totally different space than we were this year.”
UTEP will kick off their 2026 football season on Friday September 4th on the road at No. 10 Oklahoma.
