SAN ANTONIO – A driver crashed into a gas line near downtown San Antonio early Tuesday morning before abandoning the vehicle and leaving the scene.
The accident happened just after 5 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Probandt Street and Steves Avenue, just north of U.S. Highway 90.
Police said the vehicle struck a four-inch gas main, causing a leak. First responders initially pushed people away from the area as gas escaped from the damaged line.
The gas has since been shut off and there is no longer a threat, according to police. CPS Energy crews remained at the scene working to make repairs and clean up the area.
Police said the driver left the vehicle behind and fled after the crash. Investigators have not said whether the driver has been located or what led to the crash.
The northbound lanes of Probandt were temporarily closed while crews worked at the scene. Police expected the closure to last about 30 minutes before the roadway could reopen.
