A Richland Hills police officer on Sunday shot an assault suspect who was running toward officers outside a house, police said.
The civilian, who is expected to survive, had access to weapons at the house. A police account does not refer to whether he held a weapon when he was shot.
Before the shooting, the man, whose name and age the Richland Hills Police Department have not released, assaulted his father about 2:30 p.m. in the 6500 block of Allena Lane in Richland Hills, police said.
Officers were speaking with the victim outside the house while the suspect was inside the house, according to Officer Sheena McEachran, a Richland Hills police spokesperson. Someone reported to officers that the suspect was known to be violent.
While officers were gathering information from the victim, the suspect left the inside of the house, yelled and charged toward officers, McEachran said.
Officers told the suspect to stop. The suspect continued to advance, and an officer shot him, McEachran said.
The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation, during which the officer, whose name the police department did not release, will be on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.
The suspect, who was taken to a hospital, is in police custody on suspicion of family violence assault with bodily injury and aggravated assault on a peace officer. His father suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, McEachran said.
