A Houston man has been charged after police say he opened fire on passing vehicles last week in northeast Houston, injuring three people before officers shot him.
Demetri O’Neal Thomas, 45, is accused of firing a rifle at passing vehicles in the 6200 block of North Wayside Drive on Aug. 14, wounding three people. Two were taken to a hospital, and all three have since been reported as stable, according to the Houston Police Department.
Officers responded around 11 a.m. to reports of a man shooting at vehicles and found Thomas allegedly holding a rifle on the front porch of a home on St. Louis Street, police said. Three HPD officers and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, police said. After Thomas raised the rifle, police said, the four law enforcement officers opened fire, striking him multiple times.
Thomas was taken to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized Monday, according to police.
He has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
