EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Police say the 26-year-old man accused of a crime spree in Las Cruces was arrested in El Paso after he broke into a home and locked himself in a bathroom.

According to the El Paso Police Department, Jesus Angel Cortez was arrested on Sunday after officers were called to the burglary of a home on the 600 block of Upson in Central El Paso and found that Cortez had allegedly locked himself in a bathroom after the homeowners arrived.

Cortez, whom EPPD identified as a resident of Sunland Park, was taken into the El Paso County Downtown Jail, where he was charged with burglary of habitation and, according to records, booked Tuesday.

This charge is on top of the charges that Cortez is already facing in Las Cruces after he allegedly went on a crime spree there, randomly shooting at a car and then trying to break into the home of her children’s mother and steal a child.

According to the Las Cruces Police Department, Cortez allegedly shot at a car, injuring a 34-year-old man and his 11-year-old son at the intersection of South Solano Drive and Missouri Avenue in Las Cruces. The man suffered a gunshot wound, while his son suffered shrapnel injuries to his face and arms.

LCPD investigators said they believe the drive-by shooting was unprovoked, adding that the victims said they don’t know Cortez or had any interaction with him before the shooting.

Cortez was reportedly driving a charcoal Dodge Durango when the shooting happened.

Then, that same day, authorities believe Cortez tried to take the kid from his children’s mother’s home, leaving a broken window and a gun at the scene, which police believe he dropped before fleeing.

As of now, LCPD has broken down the charges Cortez is facing in Las Cruces:

Shooting at or from a motor vehicle causing injury. Two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Two counts of child abuse.Aggravated burglary.

LCPD said that more charges could be added as this case is still under investigation.
