PLANO – The City of Plano is looking for an artist or artist-led team to design and fabricate a permanent artwork that marks the entry to the Historic Downtown Plano Arts District. The piece will sit at the northeast corner of G Avenue and 15th Street and serve as a landmark for the district that commands a strong presence both day and night.
The commission is $125,000, all-inclusive, covering design, materials, fabrication, travel, insurance, shipping, and installation. The call is open to artists nationwide.
The artwork will draw on the character of Downtown Plano’s historic period, 1890 to 1936, through its form, materials and detailing. It does not have to imitate historic design, and creative, contemporary approaches are welcome. The piece must permanently include the words Heritage, Arts District and Downtown Plano.

The selection happens in two phases. In Phase 1, artists submit work samples, a resume, a bio, and a letter of interest by July 27. A selection committee will then invite three to five finalists to visit the site in Plano and create a site-specific design proposal. Finalists receive $1,000 to cover travel and their proposal.
“This artwork will be one of the first things people see when they enter the district,” said Michelle Hawkins, Downtown Plano Manager. “We want a piece that reflects the history and spirit of Downtown Plano and gives the arts district a landmark of its own.”
