If you bought a home in Texas in the last several years, this one’s for you. A multimillion-dollar settlement could put money back in your pocket.

HOUSTON — If you bought a home in the U.S. in recent years, you might have money coming your way. Keller Williams and RE/MAX have agreed to a $28.5 million settlement over allegations that real estate companies worked together to keep agent commissions artificially high, and Texas homebuyers who purchased property during a specific window could be eligible to file a claim.

The lawsuit centers on real estate commissions, the fees paid to agents when a home is bought or sold. Homebuyers alleged that major real estate companies coordinated to keep those commissions higher than they should have been, which could have meant buyers paid more for their homes. Keller Williams and RE/MAX deny any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the case rather than continue fighting it in court.

For Texas residents, the settlement generally covers eligible residential purchases made between January 25, 2019, and April 14, 2026, as long as the property was listed on an MLS, or multiple listing service.

There is no word yet on how much money each claimant could receive. That amount will depend on how many people file claims, how much a claimant paid for their home and how much they paid out in commission.

Anyone who purchased more than one home during the eligible time period needs to file a separate claim for each property.

The deadline to file is fast approaching. Claimants have until August 25 to submit their paperwork.
