A blue cross now stands along Highway 114 near Northwest High School, marking the spot where 32-year-old Brandon Webb was killed in a hit-and-run Sunday morning.

To passing drivers, it’s easy to miss. For his sister, Cortney Sosa, it represents an unimaginable loss.

“I was just talking to him, you know. So, I didn’t want to believe it,” Sosa said.

According to Fort Worth police, Webb was walking in the middle of Highway 114 after midnight when he was struck by a vehicle believed to be a white vehicle. Sosa said Webb, a father of five, had been in the car with his wife; there could have been a disagreement before he got out and started walking along the busy roadway.

Webb — identified as Unit 1 — was walking eastbound between lanes 1 and 2 of the 2076 block of Highway 114, according to the Fort Worth Police Department. The vehicle — identified as Unit 2 — was traveling eastbound in lane 2 and struck the pedestrian with its front driver’s side before continuing eastbound without stopping. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said the driver did not stop or call for help.

“Those phone calls matter,” said Buddy Calzada of the Fort Worth Police Department.

Calzada said drivers involved in a crash are required to stop and check on those involved, even if they believe they are not at fault.

“Even if you’re not at fault and you still decide to leave, it’s still considered a hit-and-run because you didn’t check on anybody,” Calzada said.

Sosa said she doesn’t understand how the driver could leave the scene.

“It’s just crazy that someone can go on with their life knowing that they killed somebody,” she said.

Sosa and Webb reconnected about 10 years ago after growing up separated within the foster care system, along with two other siblings. At times, she said, the siblings were placed in different homes.

“We didn’t have a lot of time together. We missed out on a lot,” Sosa said.

The siblings lost their oldest brother last year at age 34. Sosa said she takes some comfort in knowing her two brothers are now together.

“For me, I feel too he’s a little bit at peace, because they’re together,” she said.

Sosa said what hurts most is knowing Webb’s children will grow up without their father.

“That’s one thing we were literally talking about before he passed — even at 30 years old, we still crave that mother-father attention, and it’s sad,” she said.

Sosa is raising money to help cover funeral expenses. She said she hopes the driver responsible, or anyone with information, will come forward. 

“They know they hit him, and they continued to go,” she said.
