Former UCF, Boston College and Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos is one of several athletes who have been granted an injunction allowing him to play a fifth season of college football.
According to a report by The Athletic, that fifth season could be in Lubbock.
According to The Athletic, Castellanos would likely begin the season as backup to Hammond.
Castellanos spent last season as the Seminoles’ QB where he completed 58.3% of his passes for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was effective as a dual-threat QB, also adding 557 yards on the ground with another nine touchdowns. He went 9-for-14 for 152 yards and rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown in Florida State’s Week 1 upset of then-No. 8 Alabama.
The Miami, Fla., native also spent two seasons at Boston College, but left BC’s football program with three games left in the 2024 season after he was benched by head coach Bill O’Brien.
Castellanos is among the group of athletes told earlier this month that they could extend their college careers after a ruling by a U.S. District Court Judge stated all high school athletes in the Class of 2022 who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season this upcoming school year. It came in response to legal challenges from athletes in that class who said they were unfairly denied a fifth year.
