A Dallas ISD police officer who was shot in the leg by a man police said managed to get hold of the officer’s weapon has been released from the hospital.
The district did not release any additional information about Justin Jones, a 16-year veteran of the district’s police force who was wounded on Aug. 6.
Jose Pantoja-Morales was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant.
Dallas Police said Jones told them he was on a routine patrol when he stopped to help Pantoja-Morales, who was walking along the center median of LBJ Freeway, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Jones told investigators that Pantoja-Morales willingly got into his patrol unit so the officer could drop him off at a store near the freeway. He said he stopped the vehicle when Pantoja-Morales began pulling items out of his work bag.
Jones said that as he tried to remove Pantjoa-Morales from his vehicle, he began resisting and grabbed his gun and shot him once in the leg before running away.
Pantoja-Morales was later arrested, and investigators said he admitted to the shooting. Online records show he is still booked into the Dallas County Jail. It’s unclear if Pantjoa-Morales has an attorney to speak on his behalf.
