LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Two new four-legged deputies are making their mark at the Crosby County Sheriff’s Office.
Gracie, a pitbull, and Wilson, a pitbull mix, joined the department as certified narcotics detection K-9s after completing specialized training. The dogs now serve Crosby County and assist surrounding counties when needed.
Sheriff Corey Nunley said the K-9 team has contributed to a notable jump in arrests. The county recorded 135 arrests for all of 2024 before he took office. Now that number has reached 211.
“Here I always have a dog available, so it allows us to be much more responsive to those needs and those types of service,” Nunley said. “We have also made it available to surrounding counties if they need anything from us, our K-9s are always available for them as well.”
Beyond law enforcement
When not working cases, Gracie and Wilson provide stress relief for department officers.
“We can deal with some pretty serious stuff from time to time, and in that, having those K-9s around when they’re not conducting a search, but they’re in their playtime or their rest time, they bring a bit of calmness around them and kind of a bit of relief, Nunley said.
Making an impact
The sheriff said the dogs demonstrate that breed stereotypes don’t determine a dog’s potential for service.
“Pitbull’s tend to have pretty bad reputation as far as being violent or aggressive but as our two will show, they are perfectly well behaved, fun, loving dogs at the end of the day,” Nunley said. “They also have the ability to be very serious and serve a very vital need we have in this county,” Nunley said.
