SOMERSET, Texas — Somerset Independent School District is increasing security at its agricultural barn after dog attacks killed 16 animals over the weekend.
The attacks happened Friday and Saturday at the Somerset AG Barn after the dogs managed to enter perimeter fencing. District officials said approximately 20 sheep, goats and pigs were attacked.
Somerset ISD said an incident like this had never occurred in the more than 40 years the barn has served the district’s agriculture and FFA programs.
“This heartbreaking incident will not define our Agriculture program or our students. Our agriculture teachers, FFA families, Somerset ISD and our community will continue to stand alongside these students, support them and help them move forward,” the district said in a statement Sunday.
The district said they are taking immediate steps to expand monitoring and reinforce existing security measures around the property.
Families and community members across Somerset and neighboring counties have organized fundraisers and have even opened their homes to students who need a place to house their animals.
Somerset ISD Police is working with the City of Somerset Police Department on the investigation.
The community has set up a GoFundMe to help students who lost their animals. As of Sunday afternoon, it has raised $5.5k of its $8k goal.
“For many students, the ag farm provides hands-on learning experiences that teach responsibility, compassion, hard work, and the value of agriculture. The loss has been heartbreaking for students, teachers, families, and everyone involved in the program,” reads the GoFundMe page.
A plate sale has also been set up by the Somerset FFA, which will take place on August 29th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Somerset City Park, and cost $12 a plate.
