TCU junior wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma made his first public comments since the locker room altercation with Jacob Fields that led to Fields’ dismissal on Aug. 18.
In a now-deleted video posted to Instagram user’s Yesukristoblackjesus’ page, Ezukanma is with an adult male recapping what happened with Fields. In another video the man refers to Ezukanma as his son, but the Star-Telegram could not verify his identity.
The video opens with Ezukanma sitting on a couch and the man asks, “What, ain’t your jaw broken? So you’re telling me all that you have here is a carpet burn? How’d you get that? Because you got sucker punched? Is that what happened?”
While speaking, the man points to what they say is carpet burn on the side of Ezukanma’s face from falling from the punch thrown by Fields.
After the man refers to Fields with expletives, Ezukanma comments, “He didn’t want to get the ones,” indicating that Fields didn’t want to fight one-on-one and face-to-face.
When the man asks about why the fight started, Ezukanma says it was all about practice.
“Cause I do you bad at practice, this what you do to your teammates?” Ezukanma asks.
Ezukanma then proceeds to pull up the video of him delivering a hard block to Jacob Fields during a practice on Aug. 12.
Fields returned to practice the next day and struck Ezukanma in the locker room. TCU general manager Ryan Dorchester called TCU campus police on Aug. 14.
As Ezukanma stands up and pulls up highlights of him against Fields, the man asserts that Ezukanma didn’t need to go to the hospital and was only struck once by Fields from behind.
“How you gon’ sucker punch me, bro. That’s your teammate,” Ezukanma says.
The man then says Fields told the coaching staff everything was fine after the block on Aug. 12 before referring to him with expletives.
The video continues with Ezukanma showing highlights, including a catch in the vicinity of Fields. At the end of the play, Ezukanma taps Fields on the helmet and Fields appears to ball up his fist and then the two exchange words.
The man then hurled homophobic insults at Fields and comments that he was getting “routed up” at practice while covering Ezukanma.
The video also shows an alleged screenshot of Fields texting Ezukanma a lengthy apology.
“I apologize for how I went about this situation,” the screenshot reads. “I made an emotional decision cause of how I felt I played the last few practices. The last thing on my mind was for this to be the end result in this situation…. I know I [expletive] up, and I want you to know I never meant for this to turn out the way it did.”
The text message ends with a signature of “JFields.” A source close to Fields confirmed to the Star-Telegram that the texts came from Fields.
The man ends the video by saying Ezukanma was knocked unconscious when his head hit the floor and that Fields proceeded to kick him in the head. He said he believes Fields should be charged with attempted murder.
A TCU athletics spokesman declined to comment.
Earlier Friday, the source close to Fields, who was authorized to speak on behalf of Fields and his family, disputed some of the comments of a previous source close to Fields who told the Star-Telegram that Fields faced mistreatment from teammates in the days leading up to his dismissal.
The new source offered different context, including Fields and his family’s belief that he didn’t face bullying or mistreatment leading up to the incident. Instead, the source attributes Fields’ actions to tensions brewing from competitive football and some questionable plays in practice.
