EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – As National Dog Day approaches Wednesday, Aug. 26, El Paso Animal Services is using the occasion to shine a light on shelter dogs still waiting for homes and ways the community can help animals beyond adoption.
This month, El Paso Animal Services is participating in the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Rescue Effect campaign, which focuses on how one adoption can create a ripple effect throughout a shelter.
When one animal is adopted, space becomes available for another pet in need of shelter and care.
El Paso Animal Services said fostering, volunteering, donating, and sharing information about adoptable pets can all support animals in the shelter, even for those who are not ready to adopt.
National Dog Day, observed Aug. 26, provides another opportunity to draw attention to dogs waiting for homes in El Paso. The shelter has dogs of different ages, sizes, breeds, and personalities available for adoption, according to the organization.
Rather than simply celebrating dogs with treats or activities, El Paso Animal Services is encouraging residents to consider how they can help a shelter animal in some way.
For residents who cannot adopt, the shelter’s message is that smaller actions can still help.
Opening their home temporarily as a foster, volunteering, or sharing a shelter dog’s story with someone who may be looking for a pet can still go a long way in helping.
