LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock Christian University is celebrating 70 years of enrollment this year. University leaders said their greatest accomplishment over the decades has been the students they prepare for the workforce.
Dr. Kent Gallaher, LCU provost, said “We believe it’s not just about training somebody for a career. It’s equipping them with the kind of character that they need to be a good employee, to be someone that sticks and stays and is a great team member.”
Dr. Scott McDowell, LCU president, said “So when you hire a Lubbock Christian University graduate, you’re hiring somebody that is going to be able to be there with you for the long run.”
University leaders hope to continue growing the diversity of the institution over the next 70 years.
“We serve West Texas,” McDowell said, “and our student body is a reflection of West Texas. We’re a Hispanic-serving institution. Last year’s freshman class had 44% Hispanic students. We’ll probably be at or above that number in this year’s class. And that’s when LISD is graduating 60% Hispanic students. So we are connected to our community, I think, very well.”
Dr. Don Williams was a student at LCU in 1969 and is now a professor at his alma mater. He said the spirit of the campus hasn’t changed, and he hopes it never does.
“It’s the spirit of the campus,” Williams said. “It’s the ability to care about your students, to work with them, to encourage, to, in my book, always try to find that which is most excellent in dealing with individuals.”
