SAN ANTONIO — Six residents safely escaped a South Side house fire on Sunday as firefighters faced water supply issues from a faulty hydrant.
Firefighters were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. to the 600 block of Stonewall Avenue near I-35.
Crews made entry into the home and encountered high heat conditions inside. The flames had spread from the left side of the home across a covered patio towards the rear.
The homeowner reported hearing popping noises outside before discovering the fire. All six occupants were able to get out safely before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters ran into some water supply issues due to a non functional hydrant next door. Crews managed to transfer water from fire engines before they were able to find a working hydrant about 800 feet away.
The interior sustained severe damage, which crews estimated at about $200,000. Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause and origin of the fire but did say it appears to be electrical.
The displaced residents said they planned to stay with family members.
