Texas Gov. Greg Abbott releases botched summer playlist no one asked for

Somewhere, a social media intern should be embarrassed.

Even though summer is almost over, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott posted a “summer playlist” online Friday for some reason, and it features several glaring errors that are likely to leave any fan of Lone Star State music shaking their head.

The playlist — which we’re totally sure wasn’t created via a prompt in ChatGPT — features songs about Texas. However, it butchers the name of more than one of the state’s well-known musical artists.

Most glaring of all is the inclusion of “Krugbhagin,” which presumably refers to the Houston band Khruangbin and not Bilbo Baggins’ unemployed cousin who sells skunk weed in the Shire.

The entry — which is supposed to refer to a song called “Texas Sun,” a track the chill, funk-inspired band collaborated on with Fort Worth singer-songwriter Leon Bridges — also botches the title by calling it “Texas Sun Krugbhagin.”

Umm … gesundheit?

But the embarrassments don’t stop there.

Abbott also included a version of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” by San Antonio-tied country artist Moe Bandy but butchered his name too, calling him “Moe Brandy.”

What in tarnation?

The cursed playlist also features “Texas” by Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug, an artist we’re sure Abbott listens to all the time while sippin’ on some sizzurp.

Ironically, around the same time that Abbott was plugging BigXThaPlug, the rapper was arrested in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on several charges, including driving while intoxicated, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm. The arrest caused him to miss an appearance at a country music festival in Winnipeg — even though the governor is apparently a huge fan.

Granted, if Abbott even laid eyes on this list at all, he probably thought “tha plug” was referring to a hair transplant procedure or a shower drain.

But the social media team wasn’t done trying to prove that Abbott is cool, actually.

Over the weekend, the guv’s minions also released an Instagram video of him shaking hands and kissing babies set to a song by Future — another rapper we’re sure he listens to all the time.

The clip includes the lyric “Workin’ on the weekend like usual” from Future’s song “Life is Good,” but for some reason doesn’t include the part where the artist raps, “I was in the trap serving cocaine.” Huh.

Fans also may notice that Abbott’s summer playlist didn’t include obvious selections from other Texans, including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bob Wills, Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Selena, Beyoncé or Kris Kristofferson.

But let’s be glad that they were marked safe from being uncool by association.
