Arlington Library Awarded $25,386 Grant for Neurodiverse Programming

The Arlington Public Library will expand its innovative neurodiverse adult programming thanks to a $25,386 Special Projects Grant awarded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The Arlington Public Library will expand its innovative neurodiverse adult programming thanks to a $25,386 Special Projects Grant awarded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Building on the successful launch of its Neurodiverse-Friendly and Neurodiverse-Focused adult series earlier this May, the new funding will allow the library to broaden its reach to community members with higher support needs while continuing to build low-pressure, welcoming environments for all abilities.

Neurodiversity recognizes that people experience and interact with the world in diverse ways, spanning autism, ADHD, learning differences, and more. Arlington Public Library’s programming focuses on removing traditional barriers by incorporating low-sensory adjustments—such as softer lighting and multi-format instructions—and encouraging participants to bring personal comfort items like headphones or sunglasses.

Expanded Program Offerings & Facilitator Recruitment

With this funding, the library plans to enhance popular core events and enhance staff training while introducing sensory kits and specialized discussion tracks:


Core Social Events: Continued support for low-pressure gatherings like the popular Adult Show & Tell, Silent Disco and Hobby Swap, designed to foster connection over shared interests.
Targeted Discussion Series: New guided conversations exploring key topics, including Neurodiversity & Relationships, Neurodiversity on the Job, Rejection Sensitivity, and Life Hacks & Adaptive Strategies.
Higher Support Needs: Expanded tailored offerings to ensure adults across all spectrums of support feel fully included and engaged. Plans include the addition of Sensory Kits, which patrons could check out and use during programming. Kits would include things like personal comfort items, headphones and sunglasses.

The library is currently seeking passionate facilitators to help lead the upcoming discussion series.
