El Paso, Texas (KFOX14) — Most people do not need another prediction about where the market is going. They need a clearer answer to a much more personal question: Is my money doing what I need it to do?
That was the practical question I brought into my conversation with Bernard Semon, portfolio manager and financial advisor at Stratos Investments of OneSeven in downtown El Paso. Bernard began his career in commodities in 1981 before moving into equities and portfolio management, giving him experience across two areas he believes are especially important in the current market.
Bernard set the tone early in our conversation.
“I definitely believe that you should have the confidence that you know your money is working for you at all times,” he said.
The part that caught me was his emphasis on process rather than prediction. Instead of building an investment plan around whether the market might move up or down next, Bernard described looking closely at individual investments and creating portfolios intended to function through both favorable and difficult conditions.
That does not make uncertainty disappear. No advisor or investment strategy can do that. His point was that investors should have a plan before a difficult market arrives, along with someone who is prepared to monitor that plan and explain the decisions being made.
Bernard said his approach is also deliberately selective. He is not looking for one dramatic investment to carry an entire portfolio.
“I’m not trying to hit home runs,” he said. “I’m trying to get consistent returns from great companies that I’ve studied.”
Consistency is his stated objective, not a promise of future performance. The firm’s official materials say its portfolios may include stocks, fixed-income strategies, commodities, master limited partnerships and alternative strategies. Stratos says its investment decisions consider a client’s goals, risk tolerance and individual needs, with an emphasis on diversification and active monitoring.
Our conversation also moved beyond stocks. Bernard pointed to higher energy and utility costs, data centers, copper and other commodities as economic factors he believes investors should continue watching. Because his professional background began in commodities before expanding into equities, he sees value in evaluating how those markets may interact rather than treating them as completely separate conversations.
Still, the part of the interview that stayed with me was not about a particular stock, commodity or market forecast. It was about accountability.
Bernard said his own money is invested in the portfolios he manages and that clients rely on him to be available when questions or changing conditions arise. He described that responsibility in personal terms.
“It’s not about money, it’s really much more about being a service,” he said.
That is a useful question for anyone interviewing a potential financial advisor: Who is actually making the investment decisions? How are those decisions monitored? Who will explain what changed when a strategy is adjusted? And will that person still be available when the market becomes uncomfortable?
Bernard’s approach will not be the right fit for every investor, because investment needs, risk tolerance and financial circumstances are different for everyone. The practical takeaway from our conversation was simpler. Your money should have a purpose, your portfolio should have a process, and you should understand who is accountable for managing it.
