EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso healthcare leaders discussed plans for a proposed comprehensive cancer center during the Central Business Association’s August luncheon Tuesday.
The luncheon, held at the El Paso Convention Center, featured Dr. Richard Lange, president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, and Jacob Cintrón, CEO of University Medical Center of El Paso.
The presentation, titled “The Making of a Comprehensive Cancer Center in El Paso,” focused on how expanded cancer services could affect patients, families and the region’s healthcare system.
Organizers said some El Paso residents currently must travel outside the Borderland to access certain advanced cancer treatments.
A comprehensive cancer center could help bring more specialized care closer to home while expanding local resources for cancer patients.
The discussion also addressed the potential economic impact of the project, including skilled healthcare jobs, medical research, workforce development, research funding and continued investment in El Paso’s healthcare sector.
