Part of a key arterial roadway for Central Texas commuters is closed on Wednesday morning, August 26, following a deadly crash involving a pedestrian.
The Austin Police Department confirmed just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, its officers were investigating a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near the 4500 block of northbound North MoPac Expressway at 45th Street. Officials stressed commuters needed to find alternative routes, with the entire northbound road closed near that intersection.
In a follow-up social media post, APD officials said all northbound traffic is exiting at 45th Street, with MoPac closed between the 4500 and 4700 blocks.
“[We] will update when the roadway is open,” the post noted.
Austin-Travis EMS medics who responded to the scene confirmed the pedestrian killed had been riding on a scooter at the time of the crash. The emergency call came in around 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, with medics adding the person died at the crash site.
The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, a government agency that oversees operations of the MoPac Express Lane, also verified the continuous closure online.
Information provided by online traffic database SigAlert dded the closure boundary runs from West 45th Street up to RM 2222 and Northland Drive, with traffic backed up to Enfield Road as of roughly 7 a.m. Wednesday. Alternative route options include taking North Lamar Boulevard instead.
