The Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District issued a traffic alert on Wednesday, August 25 for portions of both northbound and southbound I-35, with overnight rolling closures teed up this week. State transportation officials noted the rolling closures will run along I-35 between Howard Lane and Parmer Lane, including the interstate’s intersection with North Lamar Boulevard.
Those closures are scheduled for Wednesday, August 26, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Thursday, August 27. TxDOT’s Austin District confirmed the 15-minute rolling closures are related to utility line crossing in the area.
The utility work is baked into the I-35 Capital Express North project, one based out of Texas’ capital city and encompassed in the state’s MyMobility35 program. The I-35 Capital Express North Project is constructing a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) managed lane in each direction of I-35 between State Highway45 North and U.S. Highway 290 East, while also reconstructing bridges, relocating and rebuilding entrance and exit ramps as well as constructing a diverging diamond interchange at Wells Branch Parkway.
TxDOT’s Austin District confirmed online various closures are underway along I-35 within the project’s boundaries, with construction currently anticipated to run until January 2029, weather permitting. Other short-term closures happening this week include northbound main lane closures for asphalt work on Friday, August 28 from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m., and on Saturday, August 29 from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to the frontage road during the flagged time periods.
