North Texas temperatures are expected to hover near 100 degrees Thursday, as the region continues to swelter under dangerous summer heat. 

The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office extended its heat advisory through 8 p.m.  While less dangerous than an extreme heat warning, North Texans are still encouraged to practice heat safety and take frequent breaks if spending time outside.

Thursday’s high is expected to be near 101 degrees, with a low of 79. As of Aug. 26, the temperature at DFW International Airport has not fallen under 80 degrees for about two weeks, according to the weather service. 

North Texans may feel slightly breezy winds, with gusts reaching up to 15 mph during the day. Temperatures are forecast to be their highest Thursday from 2-4 p.m.

The weather service is forecasting a 10-30% chance of storms Thursday across areas of North and Central Texas, but most areas are expected to remain dry. 

Parts of North Texas are still recovering from a quick storm that blew through the region Wednesday leaving building damage and downed power lines in its trail. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued during the evening in areas of eastern Tarrant County and west central Dallas County. 

As of Thursday morning, about 860 are without power in Tarrant County following the storm, according to the Oncor outage map.

Dallas-Fort Worth residents may smell wildfire smoke from the Ross fire in Palo Pinto and Jack counties, the weather service warned Wednesday. 

North Texas drivers are encouraged to drive with caution, slow down and leave extra space between their car and other vehicles. According to the weather service, visibility could be as low as 1 to 2 miles at times.
