LAREDO, Texas – Two San Antonio children who were found wandering alone in Mexico reunited with their mother Monday at the Laredo border, the National System for Integral Family Development said in a news release.
Both children, ages 6 and 7, were seen at a business in Nuevo Laredo by Tamaulipas state guards. The news release described the children “asking for money without the supervision of a responsible adult.”
The guards took the children to a shelter ran by the National System for Integral Family Development, known as the DIF, because they believed the children were in danger, the institution said.
The DIF is a Mexican protective service for children, which also supports families in need.
Protection protocols were activated by the DIF and the institution notified Texas Child Protective Services to help the family reunification process, the news release said.
Personnel from the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo took the children to the midway point of the international bridge to reunite them with their mother, according to the DIF.
KSAT reached out to CPS for additional information, but the agency could not confirm its involvement without more identifying information.
