The Dallas Police Department will expand its traffic enforcement operations tomorrow, taking over freeway enforcement and crash response within city limits.
DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department will expand its traffic enforcement operations Friday, taking over responsibility for freeway enforcement and crash response within city limits.
As WFAA reported, the change was announced earlier this month with the end of the Dallas County Highway Traffic Program agreement. Under the agreement, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic enforcement and crash response on freeways within Dallas.

DPD said it has increased staffing in its Traffic Unit ahead of the transition, adding dedicated personnel to respond to crashes, enforce traffic laws and address safety concerns along city freeways.
The department’s responsibilities will expand again next week, when DPD takes over the same responsibilities on North Texas Tollway Authority roadways within the city.
The tollway transition follows the expiration of another agreement which had the Texas Department of Public Safety providing dedicated law enforcement services on toll roads.
“These transitions allow us to take a more comprehensive approach to traffic safety across Dallas,” Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said. “By increasing the capacity of our Traffic Unit, we can provide specialized response on our freeways and tollways while reducing the need to pull patrol officers away from neighborhoods and emergency calls for service.”
Drivers should continue to call 911 for emergencies and serious crashes.
