A federal judge in San Antonio is set to hear arguments Friday
SAN ANTONIO – A legal battle over a proposed border security project in the Big Bend National Park region is playing out in a San Antonio federal courtroom.
“The People of La Junta for Preservation,” along with members of the Lipan Apache Tribe, rallied outside the courthouse Friday morning.
A federal judge in San Antonio is set to hear arguments Friday in a legal battle over plans to build border infrastructure through parts of the park.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to block construction, arguing the federal government is exceeding its authority.
At the center of the case is whether the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can use its border wall authority to build in and around Big Bend National Park.
The lawsuit also raised concerns about potential damage to archaeological and cultural sites and the impact construction could have on indigenous religious practices.
