The Fort Worth Zoo is welcoming the return of zebras to their exhibit for the first time since 2021.
“An iconic species native to the savannas of Africa, the zebra also became a beloved fixture at the Fort Worth Zoo for decades. After their departure in 2021, we realized just how much our guests missed their presence in the park,” said Michael Fouraker, executive director of the Fort Worth Zoo.
The first zebra arrived at the zoo in 1923, where the species remained until 2021 to make way for the lion habitat in Predators of Asia and Africa exhibit.
“We knew we needed to find a way to bring them back. Over the past several months, we have constructed a new barn and renovated a rhino habitat to comfortably house zebras, now residing between our hippos and flamingos in the African Savanna,” Fouraker said.
The two young male zebras, Hercules and Pegasus, are half-brothers and can now be seen at the Zoo. Guests will have access to their barn behind the scenes, as well as their main habitat, as the pair acclimate to the new surroundings.
