HOUSTON – Friday make’s day two of President Donald Trump’s visit in Houston for a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, and drivers should prepare for traffic delays and temporary road closures in the Clear Lake and southeast Houston areas.
Trump’s Houston visit is part of a two-day trip that began Thursday with a private Republican fundraiser. He arrived at Ellington Field Thursday afternoon before heading to the fundraiser.
Friday’s visit is focused on NASA and the Artemis II crew. Trump is honoring astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
But the traffic impacts won’t end when the ceremony is over.
Trump is expected to leave the NASA area and head back to Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, where Air Force One is waiting to take him back to Washington.
The exact timing of his departure has not been publicly announced.
Expect traffic impacts around NASA
Drivers near Johnson Space Center and the Clear Lake area should expect temporary road closures, traffic holds and delays as security measures remain in place for the presidential visit.
Officials have not released Trump’s specific motorcade route, and KPRC 2 will not publish the route for security reasons.
Instead, drivers should be prepared for disruptions on roads surrounding the NASA campus and nearby communities.
Traffic could be stopped temporarily as the presidential motorcade travels through the area.
More traffic impacts expected near Ellington
Drivers in southeast Houston and around Ellington Field should also be prepared for additional traffic disruptions later Friday.
Once Trump leaves Johnson Space Center, he is expected to travel back to Ellington Field, where he will depart Houston.
That means drivers could see a second wave of temporary road closures and traffic holds in the Ellington area as the president’s motorcade makes its way back to the airport.
The timing of those closures will depend on when the president leaves NASA.
Drivers who don’t need to be in the Ellington or NASA areas should consider avoiding those areas Friday.
