You know those emergency phones you see on college campuses? Texas Tech sure has quite a few. Well, the City of Lubbock has debuted a brand new emergency phone just outside the police department’s headquarters on 1205 15th Street.
New Emergency Phone in Lubbock
The purpose of this new blue light emergency phone is to allow officers to spend their time in other parts of the city for patrol.
If you’re wondering how these fancy contraptions work, it’s really complicated. Are you ready? You press the big red button. Yeah, that’s it.
Blue light emergency phones provide a direct link to police department emergency centers. This allows nearby citizens to seek immediate attention when cell phones aren’t available or when it’s outside of LPD front desk hours.
Speaking of which, LPD front desk hours will be changing as well. Starting Friday, September 4, the lobby will be open to the public from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Any interaction outside of these hours will be addressed via the blue light emergency phone.
Don’t worry, there is still 24-hour support with the emergency phones, even if the front office is closed.
You see, changing these front desk hours frees up overnight personnel who originally would have to sit and attend the headquarters lobby. Now that they are more available, their time can be spent assisting patrols across the city during peak hours.
