Local and federal agencies are coordinating security, emergency response, transportation and medical services for the Republican convention next month at the American Airlines Center.
Officials said they are preparing for disruptions while trying to limit the effects on residents, businesses, commuters and visitors.
The event will close Houston Street, Victory Avenue, Nowitzki Way and other streets in Victory Park from Sept. 7 through early Sept. 11.
Here are the officials leading those efforts and their guidance:
Dallas Police Deputy Chief Devon Palk: Expect traffic disruptions, rolling road closures and a heightened police presence, particularly around American Airlines Center and Victory Park. Those with jobs in the Victory Park area should work from home if possible. Police are also contacting protest organizers to identify safe locations and routes while preserving access to homes and businesses.
Kevin Oden, director of Dallas’ Office of Emergency Management and Crisis Response: The city will activate its emergency operations center to coordinate departments and outside agencies. His office is preparing for emergencies beyond the convention site so Dallas can respond quickly without neglecting the rest of the city.
Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief Justin Ball: First-aid stations, roaming medical teams and paramedics will be deployed inside the arena. With late-summer heat expected, attendees should stay hydrated, seek shade and pace themselves.
Christina Foley, special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Dallas field office: Officials are designing the security perimeter to minimize disruptions to residents, businesses and visitors. Some people may need to pass through checkpoints, and temporary fencing, vehicle barriers and traffic restrictions will become increasingly visible before the convention.
Joseph Rothrock, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas field office: The FBI is monitoring potential threats and coordinating intelligence, counterterrorism and crisis response with other agencies.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Chief Charles Cato: DART will close Victory Station near the arena during the convention because the security perimeter prevents trains from serving it. Riders should monitor the GoPass app for service changes and alternate routes.
