LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock leaders volunteered their lunch breaks to make sure more than a thousand people received a meal on Friday.
Big Wheels Deliver Meals gives homebound, elderly and disabled people a chance to eat a hot meal and see a familiar face.
Lubbock leaders – law enforcement, business leaders, city officials, and some familiar KCBD faces – rode around in unique cars delivering Sonic hamburgers to Meals on Wheels clients.
“It’s really just a way to get the community involved in our mission. It’s not a fundraiser, this is all community supported,” Lisa Gilliland, the Executive Director of Lubbock Meals on Wheels, said.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels serves more than one thousand clients across 81 routes every day.
“We have about 1,700 [volunteers], but as we add more routes, we always need more to get those meals delivered and get the operation going,” Gilliland said.
For many of the clients, the Meals on Wheels visits are about more than food. It could be the only social interaction they get for the day.
“I have serious health issues and at least once a day I get checked up on in case I’m found dead,” Kenneth Landert, a Meals on Wheels client, said.
Volunteers also bring pet food for clients, as most are unable to leave the home for regular grocery runs.
“They bring dog food. That’s important because I have two dogs,” another Meals on Wheels client said.
All of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ efforts are community efforts, Gilliland said.
“We’re not government funded and we’re not a United Way agency,” Gilliland said. “We rely completely on the support of the community and the donations that we ask for stay right here in our community.”
Anyone with a driver’s license can volunteer as a Meals on Wheels driver. The organization will provide training and will work around your schedule.
