Hell Below/ Stars Above is the most criminally overlooked rock album of all time. It is my absolute favorite from the Toadies. It’s as emotional and gorgeous as Southern Gothic music can be, and it is very dear to me.   And now, for the first time in 25 years, it’s available on vinyl.

The record, pressed in a beautiful iridescent wave color, is available signed from the Toadies website, thetoadies.com. The unsigned has already sold out there; however, it does appear that there are still some unsigned copies available through Interscope. Since it is a pre-order, the record will ship at a later date, and it’s possible there may be more records released in more places.

Will The Toadies Bring Copies To Their Lubbock Show?

Great question! I do not know the answer to that at this time, but since pre-ordered records begin shipping 10/02 and the Lubbock show is 10/10 (tickets available here), it may be possible. However, if you really want the record, you may want to ensure you get a copy by pre-ordering. I also do not yet know whether any record stores will be getting it, which would be my preferred way to purchase it.

Why I Love Hell Below/ Stars Above

It’s dark. It’s lovely. It has songs that absolutely rock, too. It’s so shamefully slept on, which does make it feel like my own, personal hidden treasure, something meant entirely for me. It also touches my heart that the late Elliot Smith played the piano on the title track of the album.

If you love Rubberneck, you’ll surely love tracks like “Heel,” “Motivational,” and “Plane Crash,” as they all deliver that extremely satisfying rowdiness. If you like the aching, beautiful songs, Dollskin will break your heart in the best way. The title track is so epic, so big, that it belongs in its own category. In short, this album has everything; what are you waiting for?
