Like Buc-ee’s, Whataburger has spent the last half-decade expanding outside Texas and growing its brand across the nation. However, the 76-year-old Texas staple has not abandoned the Lone Star State. In fact, the longtime burger chain will soon move into a yet-untapped part of Texas.
Whataburger has submitted plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) for a $2.3 million restaurant in Dumas, just south of the Oklahoma border in the Texas Panhandle. Once open, this would be the northernmost Whataburger in Texas. Prior to this, folks in Dumas, a town of more than 14,000, would have to drive 47 miles south to Amarillo for all things burgers, fries and honeybutter chicken biscuits.
The restaurant will be built at 1200 South Dumas Avenue, right across the street from a Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store. The address used to be a Super-Rentals furniture, appliance, and electronics store, but as of 2025, that business has been torn down, according to Google Maps’ historical view.
The $2.3 million project is set to begin construction on September 1 and is expected to be finished by January 1, 2027, according to the TDLR. That timeline is preliminary, as all TDLRs are subject to change without notice.
A Whataburger spokesperson shared the following statement with MySA:
“We’re excited to bring Whataburger to Dumas and introduce the community to our new ‘Essentials’ restaurant prototype. At approximately 2,000 square feet, this new prototype blends familiar Whataburger elements, including our iconic orange-and-white stripes, with natural wood tones, expanded glass and modern materials. The restaurant will also feature flexible seating and dedicated pickup areas for mobile and third-party orders. Making this location even more special, it will be the northernmost Whataburger in Texas, bringing a little more Whataburger goodness to our neighbors across the Panhandle.”
