Man found not guilty in connection with 2024 murder at downtown apartment complex

  • August 29, 2026

SAN ANTONIO – After several days of testimony, a Bexar County jury found a murder suspect not guilty on Friday.

Jurors reached the not-guilty verdict for Daniel Gonzalez in Bexar County’s 399th Criminal District Court.

Gonzalez was previously accused of murder in connection with the death of Donnell Sterling in October 2024 at Victoria Plaza, a downtown apartment complex.

According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, Sterling died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Gonzalez originally faced up to life in prison if he was found guilty. Now, however, he is no longer accused in Sterling’s death.

Court records show Gonzalez will remain behind bars while awaiting trial in a separate murder that happened at the same apartment complex. As of Friday, that case has not been scheduled for trial.

BACKGROUND:

San Antonio police officers said they found Sterling dead inside his apartment.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office determined he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Gonzalez’s defense attorneys challenged the state’s case, arguing no eyewitness saw Gonzalez shoot Sterling, that Gonzalez’s DNA was not found at the crime scene, and that another person may be responsible.
