SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio police officer was injured after an alleged assault during a shoplifting call on the city’s South Side.

The incident happened at about 6:23 p.m. Friday in the 2600 block of Southwest Military Drive near South Zarzamora Street.

Police said store employees kept two suspected shoplifters in sight until officers arrived. Police said a 27-year-old man then tried to flee on foot toward a bus.

An officer made contact with the suspect, and a physical struggle followed, police said. The suspect allegedly hit the officer several times with a closed fist while trying to get away.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for precautionary treatment. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
