The Cowboys took care of a glaring need along their offensive line by trading two 2027 draft picks (a third- and a sixth-rounder) to the Pittsburgh Steelers for tackle Broderick Jones and a fourth-round pick, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Dallas Morning News.
In a corresponding move, the Cowboys released wide receiver Denzel Mims.
The acquisition of Jones, a 2023 first-round pick from Georgia, solves the problem.
Jones lost his starting job in the offseason when the Steelers drafted Max Iheanachor from Arizona State in the first round. Jones played the majority of the 2025 season at left tackle before suffering a neck injury in Week 12 that led to spinal fusion surgery.
In late July, Jones was cleared to practice and worked at right and left tackle during training camp. He’s played in all three preseason games for the Steelers, leading the team in offensive snaps in the first and second games. He started the final preseason game Thursday against Buffalo, participating in 37 snaps.
With the Cowboys, his experience at playing both tackle spots makes him the perfect candidate as the swing tackle. He’s started 38 games in his career at either right or left tackle.
After the Cowboys lost the preseason finale to the Saints on Friday, coach Brian Schottenheimer was asked if his team had its swing tackle.
“Yeah, I think we feel good about our tackle group,” he said. “I think I want to see the film, see how Nate did. Nate and Drew have been competing, but I want to see the film. But I thought we had a couple of really good days. We’re using those guys in a little different way as well. But I hope so.”
