High school football season is officially back as all 11 teams across the Denton Record-Chronicle’s coverage area got their seasons underway this week.
Thursday

Friday
Braswell 35, Crandall 24
Braswell overcame a 17-14 deficit through three quarters with a trio of fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Crandall 35-24 in the Bengals’ first game under head coach Justen Evans.
The Bengals (1-0) went up 21-17 on Crandall (0-1) early in the fourth period at Bill Carrico Athletic Complex on Zahir Trufant’s 18-yard touchdown run, then answered Crandall’s go-ahead score with a Trufant 2-yard TD rush that put them ahead for good. Khalyl Moore then connected with Landon Roland on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 2:09 to play that set the final margin.
Trufant finished with 16 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Lark led Braswell offensively with 11 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Moore finished 9 of 12 for 95 yards with one touchdown and an interception while also rushing for 33 yards on four carries.
Crandall led 17-14 through three quarters after making a field goal for the lone points of the third period. The teams went into halftime tied at 14-all after scoring on two touchdown runs each.
Braswell is back in action next Friday, Sept. 4, with a road game against Dallas Skyline (1-0).
No. 9 Guyer 45, No. 47 Rockwall-Heath 20
Guyer came out on top in Friday’s battle of state-ranked squads as it built an early lead and fended off Rockwall-Heath’s fourth-quarter surge for a 45-20 triumph.
The Wildcats (1-0), ranked No. 9 in all of Class 6A, went into halftime up 17-0 on 6A No. 47 Rockwall-Heath (0-1) after touchdown runs by Texas Tech commit Khyren Haywood and Kash Villegas along with an Andrew Johnson 36-yard field goal. Oregon commit Zane Rowe added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter that made it 24-0.
Rockwall-Heath scored a touchdown with a two-point conversion early in the third quarter, then recovered an onside kick and added another TD with a failed two-point try to pull within 24-14 with 9:43 to play. Guyer immediately answered with Jayden Thomas’ kickoff return touchdown and held on the rest of the way.
Jake Garcia had a 32-yard pick-six late to set the final margin.
Guyer continues nondistrict play Friday, Sept. 4, at 5A DI No. 11 Melissa (1-0).
No. 5 Ryan 30, Northwest Eaton 27
Ryan overcame a slow start by dominating the second half Friday against Northwest Eaton to take a 30-27 win in head coach Shane Tolleson’s debut.
The Raiders (1-0), who entered the game ranked No. 5 in all of 5A Division I, went into halftime at Northwest ISD Stadium trailing 6A squad Eaton (0-1) by a 20-13 margin. Ryan tied it up midway through the third quarter on a Damian Galo 5-yard rushing touchdown and pulled ahead late in the period as R’Mani Benjamin found Aven Thomas for a 37-yard touchdown pass.
Haylen Keese knocked through a 30-yard field goal that gave Ryan a 30-20 lead with 8:03 to play, and the Raiders held on from there as Eaton scored a touchdown with 53 seconds left to set the final margin.
Benjamin finished 7 of 12 for 104 yards and two touchdowns alongside 53 rushing yards to lead Ryan offensively. Rontavian Brown tallied 21 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown. Thomas posted four catches for 48 yards and one touchdown. Arkansas commit John Catlin Jr. caught a 37-yard touchdown pass and added a 35-yard run.
Ryan is back in action Thursday, Sept. 3, with a home game against 5A DII No. 16 Mansfield Timberview (1-0).
Oak Ridge (Calif.) 27, No. 2 Argyle 26

Prosper Richland 56, Aubrey 49 (OT)
Aubrey rallied from facing a 23-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime Friday before coming up just short in a 56-49 loss against Prosper Richland.
The Chaparrals (0-1) found themselves down 29-7 to Richland (1-0) at halftime and trailed 43-20 with 10:45 left in the fourth quarter before mounting their furious comeback.
Connor Murphy threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Luke Hellman and tacked on a 2-point conversion run to make it 43-28 with 9:04 to play. Richland responded to lead 49-28, but Aubrey pulled back within a 49-35 margin when Corbin Frazier scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
The Chaps then forced a punt and scored twice more before Richland touched the ball again. Murphy first ran for a 9-yard score, then Aubrey recovered an onside kick that set the stage for Murphy to run for a 13-yard TD that tied the game with 30 seconds to play.
Richland got the ball first to start overtime and scored on Brighton Jones’ 1-yard rushing touchdown. Aubrey was unable to answer as its comeback effort came up just short.
Murphy went 18 of 30 for 397 yards and two touchdowns while also tallying 23 carries for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead Aubrey offensively. Corbin Frazier notched 26 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Will Storey hauled in five passes for 168 yards and one TD, while Hellman added six catches for 87 yards and the one score. Riley Lemons had two catches for 84 yards.
Aubrey continues nondistrict play Friday, Sept. 4, with a home game against Van Alstyne (1-0).
Sanger 35, Lake Dallas 28
Sanger pulled out a 35-28 win over Lake Dallas in Friday’s battle between the Denton-area nondistrict foes at Indian Stadium in Sanger.
Sanger (1-0) found itself down 28-14 to Lake Dallas (0-1) at halftime before flipping the script with a 21-0 second half to take the victory. Chris Ramirez scored the game-winning touchdown for Sanger, and Lane Taylor snagged a crucial interception to stymy a promising Lake Dallas opportunity.

Jeremy Males’ squad put together an inspired effort in his first game at the helm and will look to build on it Friday, Sept. 4, when they travel to face preseason state-ranked 3A Division I squad Peaster (0-1).
Sanger continues nondistrict play Friday, Sept. 4, at Paris (0-1).
No. 23 Krum 35, Kennedale 17
Krum got out to an early lead on its way to dispatching Kennedale 35-17 in Friday’s nondistrict season opener at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats (1-0) recorded their 13th consecutive regular-season win in the process. Krum went 9-0 last year for its first undefeated regular season ever and won the last three games of the regular season in 2024.
Krum jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and went into halftime up 21-10. Kennedale pulled within 21-17 early in the third quarter, but the Bobcats answered with back-to-back touchdowns to put the game out of reach.
Carter Hollingshead led the way for Krum with four rushing touchdowns of 40-plus yards, scoring from distances of 55, 64, 62 and 44 yards. Elijah Guerrero threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Sean Welcome for the Bobcats’ other score.
Krum continues nondistrict play Friday, Sept. 4, with another home game versus Burkburnett (1-0).
No. 3 Paradise 42, Ponder 32
Ponder put together a late rally but was unable to upset state-ranked Paradise in Friday’s nondistrict game at Panther Stadium.
The Lions (0-1) trailed 21-3 at halftime and 42-10 through three quarters before scoring 22 fourth-quarter points to set the final margin against Paradise (1-0), which entered the season ranked No. 3 in all of 3A Division I.
Ponder looks to bounce back Friday, Sept. 4, with a home game against Fort Worth Castleberry (1-0).
Pilot Point 21, No. 12 Peaster 14
Pilot Point built an early lead and held off state-ranked Peaster for a statement win to open the 2026 season.
The Bearcats (1-0) led 7-0 through one quarter and 21-7 at halftime of the contest against Peaster (0-1), which went into the contest ranked No. 12 in 3A Division I after making a state semifinal run last fall. Pilot Point’s halftime lead held up as Peaster scored the lone points of the second half on a touchdown run midway through the third quarter.
David Pickrel scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with an 82-yard interception return to the end zone on the final play of the first half. Josh Chumley had Pilot Point’s other two touchdowns with a 47-yard rush in the first quarter and 57-yard run in the second period.
Chumley finished with 13 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bearcats. Hastings Fischer added 10 carries for 66 yards.
Pilot Point continues its nondistrict slate Friday, Sept. 4, at Mineral Wells (1-0).
