San Antonio drivers could face major traffic delays this weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a near-complete shutdown of a heavily traveled interstate.
The agency announced it will close all southbound (SB) main lanes of Interstate 35 from Randolph Boulevard to Fratt Road beginning Friday, August 28, at 9 p.m. It will remain inaccessible for travelers through Monday, August 31, at 5 a.m.
Additionally, the SB I-35 frontage road and the eastbound (EB) Loop 410 to SB I-35 flyover will be closed. Only the SB I-35 to WB Loop 410 flyover will remain open.
Folks traveling past the popular Cowboys Dance Hall or near Windcrest will be most affected. While inconvenient for some commuters, TxDOT says the interruption is necessary to install a steel bridge beam in the area. It’s part of a larger initiative, the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project.
Here’s what residents can expect on their routes, according to TxDOT.
