Southwest Independent School District announced two of its schools will be closed Monday because both campuses remain without electricity after Friday night storms knocked out power in the area.
“Medio Creek Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary will NOT be open, all classes are canceled,” the school district said in a Facebook post Sunday.
All other Southwest ISD schools will be open, the post said.
A severe storm battered the San Antonio area late Friday, toppling trees and utility lines, causing widespread power outages and dumping heavy rain on streets.
Power outages forced many businesses to close over the weekend, as area residents cleaned up debris and assessed damage to property. As of 7 p.m. Sunday, about 8,400 CPS customers remained without power.
San Antonio officials said Sunday that two people appear to have died in the severe storm.
Amid the ongoing recovery efforts, normal operations are beginning to resume.
San Antonio ISD said it will open its schools on Monday.
“We look forward to welcoming students and staff back to school tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 31, for a day of learning and healthy meals,” a Sunday evening Facebook post said.
Earlier Sunday, the school district said on Facebook that its schools will operate on a normal schedule, and that “district teams are actively inspecting campuses to ensure they are safe, operational, and ready to welcome students and staff.”
Alamo Heights ISD also plans to open its schools on Monday.
“Maintenance staff is working around the clock to take care of our facilities and ensure they are ready,” according to a Facebook post.
Also opening Monday is San Antonio College, where power has been fully restored at its Main Avenue campus near downtown. Operations at the college will resume as normal, according to a social media post.
Our Lady of the Lake University on the city’s West Side will be closed Monday, and all classes there are canceled “due to storm-related outages and recovery efforts,” the school said on Facebook.
