HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 27-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning after a suspected wrong-way driver crashed head-on into her car on the Eastex Freeway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
911 calls came in a little after 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning saying that a vehicle was going southbound in the northbound lanes. A few minutes later, callers reported the vehicle had crashed.
Investigators said Kelsey Gomez was driving a Honda Accord heading northbound in the on the Eastex Freeway when Alfredo Cartagena, driving Chevrolet Silverado southbound in the northbound lanes, struck her vehicle head-on.
Gomez was extricated from the Honda, and deputies performed life-saving measures but she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Cartagena was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators said he showed signs of intoxication. A search warrant was obtained and executed, and Cartagena was charged with intoxication manslaughter.
The investigation remains ongoing by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
