EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 20-year-old man is accused of intoxication assault after a Can-Am rollover in El Paso County left two teenage passengers with crushed fingers, according to criminal complaint affidavits.

Jorge Alberto Gomez Alvarez was charged in two complaints with intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury following the crash on Saturday near Ponchatoula and Mandeville avenues.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 12:16 p.m. to the single-vehicle crash involving a white 2024 Can-Am Maverick DS, the affidavits state.

Investigators said Gomez Alvarez told deputies he had been at an after-party that continued following his cousin’s quinceañera.

He allegedly asked his aunt, identified in the affidavit as the vehicle’s owner, to use the Can-Am for a “joy ride” and took five passengers, despite the vehicle having seating for four occupants, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavits, Gomez Alvarez said he accelerated after turning onto Mandeville Avenue, lost control and swerved before the Can-Am rolled several times.

Deputies reported seeing skid marks that indicated the vehicle made a hard, fast turn and then accelerated before rolling about four times. All five passengers were taken to the hospital.

A 16-year-old passenger was pinned beneath a side roof bar and suffered three crushed fingers on the right hand, investigators said.

A 15-year-old passenger suffered crushed fingers on the right hand. Doctors were monitoring blood flow to both teens’ injuries to determine whether amputation could be necessary, according to the affidavits.

The affidavits state Gomez Alvarez had bloodshot eyes, struggled to keep his balance and admitted to drinking “un poquito,” or “a little bit,” before driving.

He allegedly said he drank one can of Ultra beer, the document stated.

Deputies said Gomez Alvarez showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing. A breath test reportedly measured his blood alcohol concentration at 0.142 and 0.136, above Texas’ legal limit of 0.08, the document stated.
