(TNS) — Fort Worth ISD is partnering with OpenAI to bring the company’s ChatGPT for Teachers program to educators in the district.

OpenAI, which introduced its ChatGPT for Teachers program last year, announced last week it is partnering with 55 school districts across 20 states to give teachers access to ChatGPT in their classrooms. Also included in the partnership are four other Texas school districts, but Fort Worth ISD is the only Tarrant County district.

The partnership will allow Fort Worth ISD teachers to adapt lessons, prepare substitute materials, analyze info, and create classroom resources and lesson plans using ChatGPT, according to OpenAI. It also allows teachers to automate administrative tasks so they can “spend more attention on students.”

In a statement to the Star-Telegram, a spokesperson for Fort Worth ISD said the district has not yet fully fleshed out how teachers will use ChatGPT for Teachers in classrooms.

“FWISD is in the early stages of exploring opportunities to leverage OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology to support innovation, efficiency, and productivity across the district,” the spokesperson wrote. “We are taking a thoughtful and deliberate approach as we assess the role of AI in supporting our mission. At this phase, our focus is on evaluating potential use cases and establishing the appropriate governance, security, privacy, and instructional guardrails needed to ensure any implementation aligns with district policies and priorities.”

OpenAI is also rolling out a new data privacy agreement between schools and the company, which provides a framework for districts like Fort Worth ISD to evaluate ChatGPT against their student data privacy requirements. The company hopes the privacy agreement helps make AI adoption simpler and more consistent across school systems.

“Our work continues to be guided by the belief that AI should support learning, not shortcut it, and educators should remain in control of how AI shapes classroom experiences,” OpenAI wrote in a news release. “In this spirit, ChatGPT for Teachers continues to be available to administrators, faculty and educators only.”WHAT IS INCLUDED IN CHATGPT FOR TEACHERS?
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teachers brings the most “helpful tools in ChatGPT” into the education workspace. Those tools include unlimited messages with ChatGPT, searches, file uploads, image generation and other plugins and connectors. OpenAI said the tools create a workspace where teachers can securely work with classroom materials and student information and collaborate with other teachers.

Teachers can tell ChatGPT to remember details like their curriculum, teaching styles, grade level and performance data. All information shared with ChatGPT will be protected under FERPA requirements, according to OpenAI.

Teachers can also sync other platforms, like Canva, with ChatGPT. That will allow them to bring in lesson plans and files from Google Drive on Microsoft so every ChatGPT conversation is given the context of a specific teacher’s classroom requirements.

Other ChatGPT for Teachers tools include co-planning lessons with other teachers, ready-to-use prompts from teachers already using ChatGPT and the ability for district leaders to bring their teachers into one workspace with role-based access controls.

Fort Worth ISD is one of several districts in Texas that have also partnered or were already partnered with OpenAI. Houston ISD was part of OpenAI’s first cohort of districts that first brought ChatGPT for Teachers to classrooms last year.

Fort Worth ISD it not yet sure when ChatGPT for Teachers will start to roll out across the district for educators to use.
