The man who died in a shooting Monday after a police chase that ended at a Sam’s Club in Burleson has been identified, according to Tarrant County records.
Jason Levi Stroud, 43, died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A Cleburne police officer, who has not been publicly identified, was shot in the leg during the incident and was taken to a Fort Worth hospital in a stable condition, police have said. The officer was released from the hospital and is recovering at home, Cleburne Mayor Derek Weathers said in a social media post.
Chase ended in fatal shooting
Cleburne police officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. Monday to a report of Stroud brandishing a gun, according to police. Stroud was in a vehicle, and a pursuit began after officers arrived.
The car chase continued through Alvarado and north on Interstate 35W before ending at Sam’s Club in Burleson, at 600 N. Burleson Blvd., police said.
Police said shots were fired during the incident and Stroud was struck and died at the scene. According to the medical examiner’s records, he was pronounced dead at the entrance to Sam’s Club.
Two Johnson County sheriff’s deputies also were involved in the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Further details regarding the number of officers who fired at Stroud and their agencies have not been released.
Burleson police officers and EMS assisted on the scene but were not involved in the shooting, a Burleson police spokesperson said in a statement.
As per department protocol, the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, according to the Cleburne Police Department.
