Central Texas travelers driving on Interstate 35 should brace for more upcoming closures ahead of Labor Day weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation has issued a traffic alert this week for two I-35 flyovers in Austin.
Eastbound and westbound State Highway 71/Ben White Boulevard to southbound I-35 flyovers will be closed nightly from Sunday, August 30 to Thursday, September 3, according to TxDOT. These closures will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., for bridge column work as part of the ongoing I-35 Capital Express South project.
Over the next few days, TxDOT is encouraging drivers to use Ben White Boulevard to access southbound I-35 at night. TxDOT’s I-35 Capital Express South Project will expand an 8-mile stretch from SH 71/Ben White Boulevard to SH 45 Southeast by adding non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and elevated managed lanes.
The project broke ground in 2022 and is estimated to be completed by late 2028, depending on the weather. As a result, TxDOT advised drivers to expect delays and remain aware when traveling through the I-35 work zone as traffic tends to slow in those areas.
Closures are subject to change at any time. TxDOT said the I-35 Capital Express expansion project is designed, “to improve mobility, enhance safety and help reduce congestion for all users.”
