SAN ANTONIO – The impacts of Friday’s storms are still visible across San Antonio’s West Side, where neighbors are cleaning up downed trees and trying to make damaged homes livable again.
On Calaveras Street near Zarzamora and Martin streets, crews have cleared trees from the roadway. But inside some homes, the damage remains extensive.
Emiliano Rodriguez said his family did not realize how severe the storms were until they saw the damage afterward.
“It was bad, but we didn’t know it was this bad,” Rodriguez said.
A tree split in half and narrowly missed his home. The storms blew trampolines onto roofs, he said.
The family was also left without power for three days, forcing them to throw away hundreds of dollars’ worth of food.
“There was no power Friday, Saturday or Sunday — those three days, no power,” Rodriguez said. “Our fridge is two doors, and we lost all of it $300 or $250 worth of groceries.”
Up the road, Oscar Jayasi is dealing with roof damage and damage to much of the inside of his home. Strong winds ripped sheet metal from the roof, allowing rain to pour into the living room, bedroom and kitchen.
Jayasi said the wind blew sheetrock across the home, while water soaked the furniture and bedding.
“This was the couch, and this was the sheetrock that was here. I guess because it didn’t fall here, it blew over here,” he said, describing the damage inside.
Buckets were placed throughout the home as water continued to fall from the ceiling.
“It started falling there, so all the bed, it got completely soaking wet,” Jayasi said.
Jayasi said he is not sure where to begin as he works to make his home livable again. He plans to ask the city for help with repairs.
Rodriguez said his family plans to cut down the damaged tree in their yard themselves. He also said neighbors have been helping one another since the storms.
