Dallas voters will see a new bond proposal on the Nov. 3 ballot that focuses on public safety.
The bond, which Dallas City Council approved in an 11-4 vote Wednesday, Aug. 12, includes more than $400 million for public safety upgrades across the city, including $82 million for a new Law Enforcement Training Center (LETC) at the University of North Texas at Dallas.
Voters initially approved $50 million for the construction of the LETC as part of the city’s 2024 bond package.
Additionally, the bond calls for $170 million for a Public Safety Training Complex (PSTC) at Dallas Executive Airport, $40 million to relocate the existing emergency operations center and 911 facility, $17 million for the demolition and replacement of the existing Fleet Maintenance Facility at the Southeast Service Center, and $150 million to co-locate the Dallas Police Department Property Room, Crime Scene and Evidentiary Vehicle Storage.
The bond also requests $22 million for the replacement of Fire Station No. 4 at Akard and Canton streets. Fire Station No. 4 is among Dallas Fire-Rescue’s highest-priority stations for replacement. The station was built in 1884 and rebuilt in 1953.
The total bond is a reduced amount from the City Manager’s recommended $960 million bond. The bond also excludes $500 million in pension obligation bonds for the Dallas Police and Fire Pension.
The Nov. 3 bond proposal comes two and a half years after Dallas voters approved a $1.25 billion bond for street infrastructure advancements and city parks.
