CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One of two men arrested following a four-hour SWAT standoff has been convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Rakim Sharkey was arrested back in April of last year along the 300 block of Foster Drive near Santa Fe Street and Texan Trail after a standoff with Corpus Christi Police that began just before 7:30 a.m. and lasting nearly four hours. After communications with police officers, two women and one man eventually came out, when police went inside, they found another man with minor injuries that needed to be taken to a hospital.
Following his arrest, Sharkey plead not guilty in the 94th District Court. On Aug. 31, a Nueces County jury convicted him of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony and two counts of unlawful restraint.
He was sentenced to 35 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on the burglary charge and five years for each count of unlawful restraint. The sentences are expected to be served concurrently.
