City Center Fort Worth will no longer host its annual 9/11 Tower Climb following changes to the property that organizers say would make it difficult to continue holding the event safely and smoothly.
In an announcement, City Center said the property recently underwent several significant improvements and enhancements that affect accessibility, event logistics and the overall participant experience.
According to the announcement, the upgrades “will create challenges that would prevent us from delivering the smooth, safe, and successful event that participants and supporters deserve.”
The organization did not announce whether the Tower Climb could move to another location or whether another group could take over the event.
The annual event brought together first responders and community members to honor those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders who died.
Tower climb events typically involve participants climbing stairs in remembrance of the first responders who climbed the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11.
The announcement also thanked the participants, volunteers, sponsors and others who have supported its event over the years.
“This decision was not made lightly, but we believe it is the right one given the changes taking place on our property,” the organization said.
According to the announcement, City Center Fort Worth said it remains committed to supporting the community and finding other opportunities to bring people together.
A separate 9/11 memorial climb is still scheduled to take place in Dallas. The 15th annual Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, at Comerica Bank Tower. First responders from across Texas and beyond are expected to climb 110 stories in honor of the firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
