EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso is moving forward with two major roadway extension projects after the City Council awarded about $30.8 million in construction contracts aimed at improving connectivity in both East and West El Paso.
Both projects are funded through the voter-approved 2022 Community Progress Bond, with construction expected to begin this fall. International Eagle Enterprises was awarded the construction contracts for both projects.
In East El Paso, the Montwood Drive Extension Project is an approximately $18.2 million investment that will connect two existing segments of Montwood Drive between Shreya Street and Rich Beem Drive. The project will create about 1.4 miles of new roadway.
“This project is a major investment in the future of East El Paso. By connecting Montwood between Shreya and Rich Beem, we are improving mobility, creating another important connection for a growing community and making it easier for families to get where they need to go,” District 5 City Rep. Ivan Niño said. “This is the kind of infrastructure investment that improves daily life and keeps East El Paso moving forward.”
The Montwood project includes a four-lane divided roadway with medians, curb and gutter; 12-foot shared-use paths and ADA-compliant facilities; street illumination and traffic signalization; landscaping; storm sewer systems; and water and sanitary sewer improvements.
The city plans to mark the project with a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 23, with construction expected to begin later this fall. After the ceremony, the contractor will begin mobilization and other preparations before major field work begins. Construction is expected to take about 18 months, with completion anticipated in spring 2028.
In West El Paso, the Resler Drive Extension Project is an approximately $12.6 million investment to build nearly half a mile of new roadway connecting Loop 375 to Dewberry Drive.
“Awarding this construction bid is an important milestone that brings us closer to delivering safer, better connectivity and an improved quality of life for residents in Enchanted Hills and the surrounding community,” District 1 City Rep. Alejandra Chávez said. “I’m proud to have helped move Resler Connect forward and to deliver an investment that District 1 residents have long awaited.”
The Resler project includes intersection improvements; street illumination; shared-use paths and ADA ramps; landscaping; bicycle facilities; drainage infrastructure; and public art.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 30, with major field work expected to begin later this fall. Following the groundbreaking, the contractor will continue mobilization and other preparations before major construction activity begins on site. Construction is expected to take about 13 months, with completion anticipated in winter 2027.
Together, the Montwood and Resler extensions represent a $30.8 million investment in El Paso’s transportation network, with the city describing the projects as voter-approved infrastructure improvements designed to better connect neighborhoods and support continued growth.
