SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Austin-based Tex-Mex chain Chuy’s has filed a site plan with the city’s planning and zoning office for a possible location in Sherman.
The request is scheduled to be heard by the planning and zoning committee on Sept. 22.
The closest Chuy’s is currently in Frisco, about a 50-minute drive for residents. If approved, the chain could move to a lot near Texas Roadhouse, IHOP and Nautilus Family Fitness, off Highway 75.
“There have been rumors kind of floating around the city for the past probably six months at this point that Chuy’s was interested in bringing a location here,” Nate Strauch, Sherman Communications Manager, said.
“But we can confirm now that they have actually filed a site plan with our planning and zoning office. So that will be heard by the planning zoning committee on September 22nd,” Strauch said.
Strauch said the hearing is typically the first step in developing a piece of property.
Chuy’s ranked as one of the most requested restaurants in a Sherman restaurant survey conducted in 2024.
“So a lot of people very excited that they’re finally taking steps to bring a location here to Sherman, which would be the only location in between, I believe, Oklahoma City or Tulsa and the DFW area,” Strauch said.
Strauch said the development would be handled entirely by a private party, meaning the city has no control over when construction would start.
“So it remains to be seen. This is still a few weeks out from even having a hearing,” Strauch said. “So when they would start construction or when that restaurant might be open, just too soon to say.”
Texoma resident Marie Childers said she is looking forward to the possibility. Childers, who lives just outside Bonham, said she comes to Sherman once or twice a week and has never eaten at Chuy’s but has heard about the restaurant, including its jalapeno ranch.
“I’m excited about it,” Childers said.
“Chuy’s would be great and I’m looking forward to it,” Childers said.
Childers said she considers the proposed site a good location.
“I think it’s a great location,” Childers said. “As soon as they finish this construction over here, it would be great where we can get in here without any problem.”
